Gadgets and ‘tech’ have undoubtedly improved our lives. They’ve brought people closer together. Saved us time. And created opportunities for an easier and simpler life.

However, all that technology comes at a cost. To date, it could be argued that the cost has been the environment. The gadgets and devices we use all require energy. Whilst we’ve made strides in providing greener energy it still makes up a tiny proportion of our overall contribution to energy.

And the number of gadgets and devices we own is growing. Not only are we buying more, but we’re passing down the old devices, adding to the overall amount per household.

And we’re using them more as well. The total amount of time spent on devices in a year rose 700 hours in 1992, to 1400 in 2007.

The net increase in energy consumption is hard to estimate. But the result is equivalent to every US passenger consuming 30% more petrol over the same period. This means more fumes, more pollution, and more bad news for the environment.

Thankfully, things are changing.

With every new generation of device the energy consumption becomes that bit more efficient. For example, if people switch to watching TV or Online Streaming on their tablets rather than through their television sets, the result is on average a 44% reduction in energy consumption.
